Telephone Triage Tool Kit

The Oncology/Haematology Telephone Triage Tool Kit for Children's Cancer Services has been updated. It provides guidance for the training, competencies, provision of triage assessment, and audit process for staff answering telephone advice line calls.

This 2nd Edition 2020 guideline provides recommendations for best practice for the appropriate treatment and management of children and young people (CYP) with cancer and serious blood disorders; it should be used in conjunction with the triage practitioners’ judgment and oncology training. All nurses answering calls are also able to refer on to medical staff, or bring patients for review outside the guideline, if a call does not fall within the remit of the Toolkit; examples being, families with limited spoken English, or unusually complex cases.

Developed and reviewed by the Children and Young People’s Cancer Nurses Group of the Royal College of Nursing and the Children’s Cancer and Leukemia Group. Endorsed by  the United Kingdom Oncology Nursing Society, The Royal College of Nursing and supported by the CCLG and CLIC Sargent.

For more information, please contact the current Chair of the CCLG/RCN Nursing Group via info@cclg.org.uk.

Services using the Toolkit should only use the 2nd Edition 2020 version from October 2020 onwards and should establish an implementation programme to refresh staff training using the updated training tools in the Toolkit; removing all previous versions of the Toolkit.
