Hugo's story

Hugo was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) in July 2023, just days before his third birthday. His mum, Breeze, shares his story.

Hugo’s symptoms were paleness of the skin, dark circles under eyes, night sweats, and unable to fight infections. Before his diagnosis, we were admitted to the oncology ward in April due to him being neutropenic and other bloods on the low side. We left having been told that there were no cancerous cells, although the team kept an eye on him by doing blood tests on a weekly basis.

At the start of July, we had another bone marrow biopsy booked. The results of this unfortunately led to Hugo’s diagnosis of ALL. I was distraught at this news as well as pregnant with another little boy and due in August.

Hugo was admitted days later and started chemotherapy treatment. He’s done amazingly and remained home for three months, but has been in hospital since for several days fighting flu. We try to stay as positive as we can through Hugo’s journey. We hope that when he reaches the maintenance stage, he’ll hopefully feel much better than he is now. We hope that our story inspires other people and helps the journey of others.
