Little Princess Trust Innovation Grant

The Little Princess Trust aims to fund innovative, hypothesis-led research projects that aim to bring novel treatments to children sooner and/or minimise the side effects of treatment.

Little Princess Trust Research Strategy

The 2022 Little Princess Trust Innovation Grant is explained in more detail in this video

The following video sets out the requirements of this grant call, in place of a written specification. If you are considering an application, please ensure you watch it in full.

Summary of key points:

  • All applications of any value will be considered. While there is no upper limit, a maximum of £1 million is given as guidance.
  • Initially, all we are asking for is an expression of interest with a lay summary of your idea and an estimate of costings in the form of a video, slide deck or written document. This should tell us what your idea is, and how it will make a difference.
  • We are only looking for projects which are genuinely new and haven't been done before.
  • A UK based institution needs to be the lead applicant, but international collaborations including Europe and the USA are welcomed

Process

  1. Ensure you have watched the video above, in full
  2. Submit an outline expression of interest by 5pm, 14 January 2022
  3. Expressions of interest will be reviewed and shortlisted projects will be invited to give a 15 minute (max) presentation, followed by a 15 minute (max) Q&A session at The Little Princess Trust's head office in Hereford on Wednesday 23 February 2022. Please hold this date in your diary now if you are submitting an application.
  4. Succesful applicants will be invited to submit a full proposal via FlexiGrant by 31 March 2022
  5. Applications will be peer-reviewed in the usual way
  6. We are aiming to make a final decision on the successful project by the end of June 2022

Part 1: Expressions of interest

Expressions of interest should be submitted by email to LPT@cclg.org.uk by 5pm, Friday 14 January 2022.

Expressions of interest can take the form of:

  • A document, maximum 2 sides of A4
  • A slide deck, maximum 8 slides (PowerPoint or pdf - with a standard text size for slides - not essentially an 8 page word document!)
  • A video, maximum 2 minutes

The subject line of your email should be LPT Innovation Grant EOI and you should include in the body of the detail the full name, institution and email address of the lead applicant, who will be the key contact for further stages of the application process.

Expressions of interest should include an indicative overall budget (estimate of total funding that will be asked for if you are invited to submit a full application)

Applications to this funding round should be proposals for innovative scientific proposals that study new approaches to treatment, in particular:

  • More effective treatments with fewer side effects for the patient while on treatment
  • More effective treatments which result in improved survival rates
  • Approaches to treatment that may lead to a reduction in short and long-term sequelae of treatment. The Trust is interested in how improved treatments might lead to a reduction in late effects, rather than interventions targeting specific late effects post-treatment.
    • In terms of late side effects of treatment, the Trust has a particular interest in chronic health conditions and disabilities. Applications focusing on fertility/reproduction, health behaviour interventions for survivors, and psychosocial aspects, are unlikely to be considered for this funding scheme.

The Trust funds innovative basic science (with a clear plan for translation/patient benefit), translational and clinical research. Other types are research are unlikely to be considered for this funding scheme.

Useful information

What will we fund?

We provide funds for the employment of suitably qualified staff and the purchase of essential equipment and consumables, and appropriate costs for dissemination including open-access publishing. We do not contribute towards the cost of tenured post nor organisational overheads.

For more information, please see our guidance for applicants.

Who can apply?

The lead applicant must be based in a UK or Ireland academic institution (university, hospital or research institute). Collaborations, including across Europe, bringing together expertise are strongly encouraged if it adds value to the project, but a single institution must take overall responsibility for management of the project and administering the funding.
