A project grant of up to £125,000 over up to three years is available for a clearly defined research project addressing a key question in paediatric rhabdomyosarcoma (RMS). The project should focus on high risk/refractory/relapsed RMS.
The funded project will improve our understanding of the disease and help improve the outlook for children diagnosed with higher-risk forms of RMS. The funds for this project have been raised by CCLG Special Named Funds.
Our project grants may support stand-alone projects, research that is part of a wider project or trial, or research that is likely to lead to a further, larger grant application to a major funder of research.
We are particularly interested in research proposals that will lead to improved treatments, with reduced side effects, and research into novel therapies. Research projects that look to apply promising developments from other cancer types (where there is a compelling rationale that this will have an impact in RMS). Applications, within this remit, from early career researchers are welcomed.
Projects should align with CCLG’s published research strategy:
“CCLG will fund research projects that will:
- Broaden and deepen knowledge of childhood cancer
- Assist in transferring research progress from the laboratory to clinical practice
- Improve treatment or patient care in the short, medium or long term
- Investigate the long-term effects of treatment with an aim to reduce these”
Proposed projects should address one of the Top 10 Research Priorities for Childhood Cancer published by the Children’s Cancer Priority Setting Partnership (please note these priorities are broad themes rather than specific research questions, giving plenty of scope for a wide range of research ideas). Further information is given later in this guidance.
The deadline for applications is 5pm, Wednesday 7 February 2024.
Assessment criteria
Applications will be judged on:
- Research need and scope
- Background evidence, preliminary data and hypothesis
- Design of proposed study
- Leadership & expertise of research team
- Justification of resources.
More information about what we are looking for in each category can be found in our 'guidance for applicants' document which can be downloaded below.

How research applications are selected
Excellent research governance is at the heart of our research decision making. Our independent Research Advisory Group (RAG) overseas our research grant rounds and follows our Principles of Peer Review Policy. All of our RAG members and external peer reviewers are asked to declare any Conflicts of Interest and adhere to our Grant Review Code of Conduct . Following peer review, the RAG will discuss and rank the applications for funding.
